Makara pada Candi Klasik Tua di Indonesia

The period of the growing influence of Hindu-Buddhist culture, or better known as the Classical period in Java is divided into two periods, namely Old Classics (8-10 century AD) and Young Classics (11-15 century AD). Old Classical period developed in Central Java was in conjuction with the development of the center of Mataram Kuna Kingdom. The temple in central Java region have typical characteristics, one of which is the ornament of Kala and Makara. Makara ornaments in Hindu-Buddhist temples in central Java were found in the form of two dimensional and three dimensional full figures.Makara is carved on the feet, body and roof of temples. The most complete Makara depiction, in three dimensional full figure for which the components of its depiction can be analyzed, lies at the temple foot, at last level of the stairs. Makara in Sankrit means giant water creatures depicted with combination of some animals. Based on the obsevations of makara put on temple stairs in the Javanese Old classical period, makara depiction are found in combination of animals living in water, land and air. The animals will be revealed in this paper.
